Roman Theatre

The Roman Theatre of Malaga or Teatro Romano is one of the historical monuments of the city of Málaga and it is the most important preserved vestige of the Roman presence in Málaga. It is located in the historic center and is one of the top attractions of the city.

The Roman theater is located at the foot of the Alcazaba. It was discovered in 1951 after the realization of some works for the municipal archive and library. Underneath the building they discovered the Teatro Romano.

Near the Roman Theater is a glass pyramid where you can see tanks performing garum. Over time, it appears that these rooms will be used as a cemetery.

Garum (Latin) or Garo is a fish sauce made from their innards. It has multiple uses. In the High Empire of ancient Rome, it was used as an aphrodisiac and also as a condiment for meals. Another use is as a skin-enhancing mask.

The Roman Theatre of Malaga was built to entertain people. It is the scene of theatrical performances and also has political and propaganda uses.

The best way to learn about all the parts of the Roman Theater and those that survive to this day is to visit the Roman Theater Interpretive Center. There you can watch a video of the 3D reconstruction of the Roman Theater in Malaga.

The Roman theatre was built in the 1st century AD, during the period of Julius Caesar Augusto. So it’s one of the oldest Roman theatres in Spain, certainly not the biggest.

Golden tip: Take the steps behind the visitor center and you can go up to the walls of the Alcazaba. From there there is a unique view of the Roman theatre
