The Historical and Botanical Garden of La Concepci\u00f3n (Jard\u00edn Bot\u00e1nico-Hist\u00f3rico La Concepci\u00f3n) is a must for any nature lover and a true gem, recognized not only in Malaga but throughout Europe. This English-style garden has an impressive collection of tropical and subtropical plants, decorated with several ponds, waterfalls and sculptures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
History of the Malaga Botanical Garden <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
It is definitely one of the best places in M\u00e1laga 150 years of history of the Jardin Botanico-The history of La Concepci\u00f3n begins with Jorge Enrique Loring and Oyarzabal, Margrave and Margravine of the famous House of Loring and Amalia Heredia Livermore. A couple among Malaga’s burghers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1855, they united several smaller farms in the north of the city that were previously used to grow olives, almonds, vines and citrus trees. Under the leadership of the French gardener Jacinto Chamoussen, the garden quickly gained recognition. It was famous not only for its large collection of plants, but also for the many archaeological remains collected by the Loring Museum in La Concepci\u00f3n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1911, La Concepci\u00f3n Estate was bought by Rafael Echevarria and Amalia Echevarrieta, a couple from Bilbao, who expanded the garden and added many of its characteristic elements such as the stream of nymphs, the palm avenue and the viewpoint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The third owner was the brother of Amalia Horacio Echevarrieta. In 1943, he took over this property and kept it in perfect condition until his death in 1963. In the following years, the garden gradually fell into disrepair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, in 1990, the Malaga City Council acquired the property and opened it to the public <\/p>\n\n\n\n
years later. Already in 1943, the park was declared a place of historical and artistic interest, and now it is recognized as a place of cultural interest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
What can be found in the Botanical Garden of Malaga? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
La Concepci\u00f3n Botanical Garden hosts an enormous collection of more than 25,000 plants and it consists many different sections showing the natural diversity of flora all around the world. Be sure to ask for a map at the ticket office, it\u2019s easy to miss some stunning views! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its\u2019 heart is the 3.5 hectares the Historical Garden with more than 3000 species, waterfalls, streams, fountains, greenhouses and historical buildings. It\u2019s the oldest part of La Concepci\u00f3n, created 150 years ago by Loring family and soon declared a \u201cgarden of historical and artistic interest\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
La Concepci\u00f3n estate stayed in the private hands until 1990 when it has been purchased by Malaga City Council. New, modern thematic gardens has been added to the Historical Part to create a space for research, preservation and education. Now Botanical Garden Malaga occupies 55 hectares and apart from being a popular touristic attraction it creates space for species preservation, research and education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Historical Garden is surrounded by the botanical garden with plants arranged in distinct sections: the aquatic plants, prehistoric plants, orchids, greenhouses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, in the northern section of the Botanical Garden Malaga, you can find a route known as \u201cAround the World in 80 Trees\u201d and a collection of palm trees as well as a section with regional plants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The southern, warmest part of the garden is a selection of subtropical fruit trees as well as cacti and succulents. Finally, in the upper section of the Garden you can find two routes \u2013 \u201cForest\u201d and \u201cViewpoint\u201d featuring indigenous Mediterranean plants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The arbour \u2013 the jewel of the Malaga Botanical Garden is an iron pergola covered with wisteria. It blooms in late March and early April and creates one of the symbolic landscapes of La Concepcion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Loring Museum – home to a magnificent collection of archaeological remains such as the Lex Flavia Malacitana, a set of bronze tablets depicting the Roman laws that ruled Malacca in AD 81-84. It now displays a reconstruction of a Roman mosaic from the village of Cartama. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Nymph Pond \u2013 next to the waterfall and palm trees section is a small pond with a statue of Valentin Duenas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The stately home – Classic villa in the central part of the historic Park; Built by its original founders, it was the site of many social gatherings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Historical vieuwpoint – a special point of the Malaga Botanical Garden visible from the highway. The historic viewpoint was created in 1920 by the second owner of the park, Rafael Echevarria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
